What is ERAP?
Eligible households with a primary residence in New York State can apply for funding through theEmergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) to catch up on rent and utility bills they fell behind on as a result of the COVID-19 problem. The initiative aids both landlords in collecting overdue rent and tenants in need of financial assistance.
I am a landlord whose tenant has either moved out or declined to apply for ERAP. Can I get financial aid if I need it?
Another new initiative, the Landlord Rental Assistance Program (LRAP), was established by state law to help landlords who have lost their tenants and are unwilling to participate in the federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP). You can not apply for this program right now.
How important is my immigration status to being approved for housing assistance?
Participants don’t need to be in legal immigration status to participate in the program.
Can I get help with my utility bill arrears only?
No, to obtain utility arrears help under theERAP, an individual must first apply for and be found qualified for rental arrears assistance. Home Energy Assistance Program applications are open to residents of New York State outside of New York City who need assistance paying utility bills but not rental arrears (HEAP).
When calculating my household income for ERAP, what kinds of funds are counted?
Earned income of full-time students who are eligible to be claimed as a dependant subject to IRS standards is not included in the calculation of household income.
How do I prove that I am unemployed?
Only when no other forms of evidence are available, self-attestation is valid.
Do I pay back the ERAP money I received?
ERAP-provided rental payments, rental arrears, and utility arrears assistance are not needed to pay back by households that qualify. Only if it turns out the application was fake or shouldn’t have been authorized would the money be returned.Post navigation
